Ordinarily, local elections in Chicago are nothing to get excited about — but February 2015 was different. An unprecedented number of independent left-wing candidates stood up to challenge entrenched Democrat incumbents. These candidates helped pave the way for building a genuinely independent left alternative to the two parties of Wall Street. The Chicago district of the ISO voted to endorse and actively campaign to elect the following candidates:
- Olga Bautista (10th Ward)
- Tim Meegan (33rd Ward)
- Jorge Mújica (25th Ward)
- Zerlina Smith (29th Ward)
- Tammie Vinson (28th Ward)
Although these candidates didn’t win this time around, they proved in practice that independent left politics is a live option. Chicago desperately needs more campaigns like this in the future. We are committed to working with others to make that happen.
We are excited about the prospect of continuing to work alongside many others in the movements and on the left to help build an independent electoral vehicle — separate from and to the left of the Democrat Machine — that is accountable to our movements rather than to the corporations and the banks.
